Prayerwalking through Panama Viejo with Young Life

July 6, 2011 by ecoach Leave a Comment

On a recent day in June, our team did another prayer walk through one of the high risk communities in Panama City Panama.

We joined two leaders from Panama’s branch of Young Life who walked us around and explained the various different sites.

Panama Viejo

Prayerwalking Panama Viejo

Panama Viejo is a historical area of the city of Panama.  The Spanish first settled this area as a stopping point for all the gold coming out of South America, where it was hauled across the isthmus and put on a boat to Spain.

A British pirate sacked and burned the city and all that is left are some stone monuments from its churches, one of which has become a national symbol of Panama.

At Risk Community

But around the historical ruins that attract tourist from around the world lies a community that is at high risk.

Drugs are traded on street corners.  Gangs fight for control.

As we walked the community with our guides from Young Life, kids play in the street.  Music blares from speakers within various houses.  Houses and shacks in various states of repair or disrepair line the narrow streets.  Chickens squak and dogs bark as we walk by.

It’s very different world than suburban USA or even the high dollar area of the city that I live in.

As we followed our guides from Young Life, two police officers stopped us and warned us of the risk of being off the tourist trail.  A taxi driver hollered that we needed a police escort to get back to the safe area.

One of the Young Life leaders is a former gang member from the neighborhood.  His best friend was killed by a rival gang.  Having given his life to the Lord, he’s studied youth psychology with a specialty in working with high risk youth.

Our Young Life leaders greet different teenagers as we walk.  These are the kids that Young Life Panama wants to reach.  I see the passion of these leaders to reach teenagers with the gospel.  I see their desire to connect and earn the right to be heard.

Prayer Walking

We spent about one hour walking their community, praying for the various areas on our journey.  Each spot they shared with me had

  • some significance to the ministry,
  • a particular call to prayer,
  • a reminder of events that will happen or have happened.

Prayer Stop #1

We began this prayer walk in one of the chapel ruins of Panama Viejo, a place where Bible Studies are held in the open air.

Bible studies are basic: what does it say, what does it mean, and how can you apply what it says.  Young Life Panama is introducing kids to personal Bible study, beginning at the most basic of levels.

Prayer Stop #2

We moved on to the gym where club meetings are held.

Young Life Panama has started holding their club meetings in this gym.

We took the time to pray for Young Life’s

  • contact work,
  • their clubs, and
  • that local churches would partner with them in their work.

Prayer Stop #3

We finished at the soccer field, an artificial turf surface where some kids were practicing their skills.

The Young Life team is working to build relationships with kids at this field.  The leaders of Young Life introduced me to several of the kids who were goofing around on the field that day.

With Eyes Wide Open

As we walked the Panama Viejo neighborhood with eyes wide open, it didn’t take much to hear and see the community need.

As I listened to the heart of these Young Life leaders, it’s clear they have gotten God’s compassionate heart for the area.  These leaders have the passion, the heart, and the calling to reach out into this community.  They are spending themselves in that community, looking to reach kids for Christ.

It’s a privilege to walk along side of them and encourage them in their ministry.

Prayerwalking Panama Viejo with Vida Joven

April 5, 2011 by ecoach Leave a Comment

Driving to the Panama Viejo neighborhood is easy on a late Saturday afternoon.

Once I found the right spot (not an easy task since I wasn’t familiar with the area), I met with the Panama Viejo Young Life team to join them in a prayer walk for their neighborhood.

We spent about 2 hours walking their community, praying for the various areas on our journey.  Each spot they shared with me had some significance, some call to prayer, some reminder of events that will happen or have happened.

We began at the soccer field, an artificial turf surface where some kids were practicing their skills.  The team is working to build relationships with kids at this field.

From there, we meandered on to a church that is working with the community.  We spent some time praying with the pastor and asking God to bless their work.  The worship team was practicing and the pastor was there praying for the Sunday services.

As we walked to the next place, I listened in to the dreams of these Young Life leaders – dreams of reaching kids for Christ and bringing hope to a community infested by gangs and other poverty related problems.

Poverty is visible at every corner.  But the neighborhood is alive with birthday parties and celebrations.  The music is loud, the adults are gathering to drink, and others are getting their hair done by neighbors who might know what they are doing.  Some are grilling their dinner out of tire-irons that hold the charcoal.

Right now, the neighborhood is “at peace,” I’m told, very unlike January when Vida Joven’s work had to stop because of violence in the community.  We prayed at one corner that was a hot-spot of gang conflict, asking God to bring His peace to that area.

Next to the church is the gym where Vida Joven will have its meetings.

The first meeting was coming up the following weekend, so we spent time interceeding for the Young Life Club meeting

As I walked the neighborhood with eyes wide open, it didn’t take much to hear and see the community need.

As I listened to the heart of these Young Life leaders, it’s clear they have gotten God’s compassionate heart for the area.  As I regularly teach other churches to get a heart for the community, these leaders get it.  They are spending themselves in that community, looking to reach kids for Christ.

It’s a privilege to walk along side of them and encourage them in their ministry.

Praying for the city

September 27, 2010 by ecoach Leave a Comment

Just recently, Anakarina participated in a Girl Scout hike up Ancon hill, the hill just to the west of the city that gives you a great panoramic vista of the city skyline.

I love going up the hill, not only to see the city, but to pray for it.

Praying for the city

When Jesus saw the crowds, his heart broke. Matthew 9:36 reads

When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

He had compassion on them.

To put it another way, he felt compassion for them.

I can imagine the heart of Christ that day on that hillside – pondering the injustice, the poverty, the lostness, the brokenness, the misery of human need, and their separation from God.

But also seeing not just a plural collective “them” but individuals with names, dreams, and families.

I can imagine the compassionate emotions swirling like in His heart like the foamy rapids of a river .

He felt it.

What happens when you pray for where you live and minister?

Sometimes my heart breaks with the compassion that might have been similar to what Jesus felt.

I imagine the crowds that steel skyscrapers and slum shacks on a muddy hillside represent – individuals who need Christ.

My heart breaks at times.

I imagine

  • the poor who try to make a living in a gang infested neighborhood where they might be killed by accident,
  • the laborers who work for minimum wage in dangerous unsafe occupations,
  • the injustices committed underhandedly,
  • the extortion and bribery that gets things done,
  • the pickpockets who steal just to get some food.

Not just for the collective crowd, but individuals.

I think of the toothless amputee, with swollen knobby fingers on his remaining hand.  He stopped me at a traffic intersection.  He used his teeth to hold the clean styrofoam cup while he maneuvered his one-legged body on crutches next to my car.  His swollen hand stuck that cup in my car window, begging for a donation of some kind.

I give him what I have, but drive away in tears.  I wish I could do more to help.

I remember the orphan who’s parents were murdered, and who had been a victim of human trafficking.

I remember the 7 year old who murdered a shop keeper.

I remember the first hand stories of gang rape and sexual abuse.

I remember seeing people eat with bare hands out of dumpsters and torn trash bags behind restaurants.

Feel the heart of God

I weep over my city.  I feel for my city.  I’ve seen brokenness that I wish I had never seen.

I sometimes spontaneously pray in desperation, “Lord send me to reach them.  Send me.”

I touch the heart of God.

The heart of evangelism is to connect with the heart of God.

Ask the Lord to share His heart for the city / town / rural area in which you live.

Ask the Lord to grow your sensitivity to His compassion.

2 Years of Ministry

July 21, 2009 by ecoach Leave a Comment

the_cry_splash_photo_1 This past week, on July 19, we passed the two year mark of our work in Panama and in Latin America.

It’s been two years of ups and down, highs and lows, all the time believing in the promise of God that called us here.

To revisit our purposes and the promise of our calling, here is a summary.

The Calling and the Promise

“Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed. . . . just as it had been said to him “so shall your offspring be.” .  .  .  . He did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. (Romans 4:18-21).

I’m not Abraham, but the Lord reminded me that he gave us a calling and promise when we were called here.

We came to Panama with a calling

to Ignite the Church in the Americas in the power of the Holy Spirit to passionately fulfill God’s call to reach the nations.

This plays out in three parts

1.  Evangelism training.

We give workshops in personal evangelism and church growth for individual churches, individuals, and also regional groupings of churches.

Workshops vary in length from 2 hours to a full weekend.    This training is taking us all over Panama, and into other countries.

The Lord has also opened to the door for training missionaries for cross cultural missions, whether in the home country with immigrants, or abroad.

2.  Serving Mission Teams.

Over the past two years,  we served a team from Seacoast in Charleston SC and then one from Richmond VA this year.

We are praying for more open doors to partner with local mission organizations that bring teams to do outreach in our city.

We firmly believe that street evangelism is not to be disconnected from a local church and we serve a local church to help in this area.

3.  Teaching Children’s Ministry leaders.

The whole family is involved in children’s ministry leadership training as the Lord opens the doors.

We continue to pray for more open doors in this area that Brenda may be able to give more presentations and grow her webiste.

As part of the promise given to us,

Panama was to be the hub from which we operate.

Panama is the airline transportation hub for Latin America, and as such, we live close to the airport.

Our ministry is international in scope, continuing to give evangelism training in the US and in Latin America.

Time in Venezuela, Nicaragua, the US, and next month Guatemala.  Costa Rica remains in discussion, as does Colombia.

Amazed at God’s care

Through it all, we’ve had to rely on God’s provision from God’s people.

There have been times we have faced the end of our bank accounts in under 45 days.

Yet there appear surprises in the mail that continue to sustain us.

Planning for the future

We are grateful for the support that has been given to us over the year.

We need to grow it to a sustainable and somewhat predictable level to free us up to ramp up more ministry.

Our budget for this coming year is about $3500 a month.  $5000 a month would enable us to save for the future.

We are not quite there and ask you to join us in praying for more supporting churches and individuals.

We ask you to pray for more paid evangelism teaching engagements in the US with churches and regional governing bodies.

Funding Our Work

June 30, 2009 by ecoach Leave a Comment

A friend of mine said this the best in his most recent letter to their supporters:

I really do not like sending out urgent pleas for help – it is rather humbling.

But I am so committed to doing this work that God has called us to and we are all seeing such wonderful fruit that is giving glory of Jesus Christ that I am willing to ask for help.

First from God and next from all of you!

I know that humbling feeling.  I’ve been wrestling with God over it for a few weeks in my own prayer time.

As we step into July, our work here faces a shortfall in its monthly support, as well as short term project needs in the next 60 days.

The global economy affects our work, much as it may have affected you personally.

Praise the Lord for Sufficient Provision

We give glory to God for how He has supported us through his people and the work of EvangelismCoach.org since we first moved here 2 years ago July.   The work here has been sustained for nearly two years without pleas for urgent support.

We’ve seen

  • Timely gifts,
  • Hallway offerings
  • Offerings at events
  • Paid speaking engagements,
  • Online Book sales (How to Welcome Church Visitors)
  • Several supporters join our team monthly – without being asked.

We’ve seen the end of our bank accounts and timely last minute provision out of the blue to sustain us a few more months.  We can give story after story of last minute provision from surprise sources.

We can also promise you that living by faith this way is also very hard on the intestines – the body still feels the stress, even if the mind is at peace in trusting God.

So many of you believe in and support our work that has taken us into 4 different countries (with a 5th one coming this August) to give evangelism training in two different cultures.

As you have walked with us via our newsletter or intercessors list you’ve heard how we’ve seen

  • People come to faith in Christ,
  • Some healings, both physical and emotional
  • Church members refreshed and encouraged to share their faith
  • Several kairos moments of ministry where the Lord has used us to advance His kingdom

We can tell lots of stories.

Learning from Paul

When Paul went to Corinth, he worked alongside Aquila and Priscilla, making tents and doing ministry on the Sabbath. Once Silas and Timothy arrived, he was able to devote himself full time.

Paul didn’t start full time in his new city.  Instead, he had to establish his base of support, either from his business, or from another form of support.  In this case, I think he was able to grow his business to the point of handing it off to someone else to manage.

Paul had to be bi-vocational for a while, before being able to be full time in ministry.

This is the season we are in now – building support and building our business to the point of setting us free to minister full time here in Latin America.

The Reality of the Present

While we have seen sustaining provision to cover our immediate expenses, we’ve not yet had enough to set aside funds for future needs that we see coming.

We have some urgent project needs connected to us being here that we simply have no savings to cover.

We are asking God for provision and look forward to being able to tell stories of this provision.

We’re working at trying to use our business to generate revenue but the economic climate of the US has canceled all my speaking invitations at least through October.

What you can do

We need

  • to expand our monthly support base and
  • A generous outpouring of gifts in the next 60 days to meet some urgent needs connected to us being here.
  • Invitations to do paid evangelism training in regional conferences.

Here is what you can do.

  • Give thanks for all the gifts that God has already sent and pray for His blessing on all those who enable this work through prayer, participation and giving.
  • Please pray that we will have wisdom to be good stewards of every penny and ask the Lord to move people to give.
  • We need to pray in an average of 3,000 a month just to keep everything going.  5,000 a month would be ideal to help us save for August 2010 and not be in this situation again next year.  And every gift helps!
  • So please pray for provision in the form of regular monthly small gifts! Each one makes a huge difference and we are so grateful for all those who already do give like this.  Your dollars go much farther here in terms of buying power for groceries and fresh fruits.

Here is how you can act

1.  Download and print our partner response form

You’ll need a PDF reader to view it.

Print it out and stick it with your devotional materials as a prayer reminder of what God might be calling you to do with us.

Whether you choose to donate or simply pray for us, still print this out.
