You’ve helped me find freedom in prayer

May 3, 2013 by ecoach Leave a Comment

At a recent prayer conference in Nicaragua, some doubt the effectiveness of their prayers because they are uncertain if they are

  • following the correct format,
  • obeying all the right rules, and
  • fulfilling all the necessary requirements for God to hear them and answer their prayer.

Nagging doubts about rules and formulas shape their perceptions of prayer.

But the spiritual thirst and hunger is there.

Pastors with little formal seminary training (practically a requirement for US Pastors) who struggle to lead growing churches.

Church leaders who want to prayerfully increase the impact of their local church to serve their community.

Several in our audience these days lack basic spelling skills, so conferences like we are here to give are effective methods of learning.

But when the teaching is over, many report the freedom of relating to God and His word and enjoying the presence of the Lord in prayer.

A Radio Interview Prepares the Way

photo

The day before the conference, a local pastor interviewed me for his radio station in Jinotega, Nicaragua.  We spent time talking about

  • The work of the Dunamis Institute
  • How the Dunamis teaching on Prayer can help believers.
  • The importance of Prayer, and
  • Why pastors and church leaders should come.

It was a tremendous opportunity to share the ministry of PRMI and the Dunamis Institute and to give a plug for the upcoming prayer conference.

Day 1: Jinotega, Nicaragua

Approximately 9 pastors are among the 40 people who have set apart a workday to attend the PRMI Ignite conference on Prayer in the mountain town of Jinotega, Nicaragua (pop. 40,000).

Matagalpa

Several have sacrificed a workday to attend, but their desire to grow in the power of prayer has motivated them to make that choice.

Some had heard the reports of last November’s Ignite and couldn’t wait for this conference to arrive.

They have gathered in the 2 room church of Vida Abundante (Abundant Life).

Expectation is in the air.

Conversation times, breakout, prayer ministry times all accompany the teaching.

Expectation

Experiential learning gives people a taste of the power of prayer.

The personal devotional breakout session allows many to hear from God about something personal.

The systematic teaching provides a framework for people to both understand and participate in the work of prayer.

JinotegaEvening

That evening, a different group has gathered for the evening worship and ministry time.

They hear about God’s call and vision, and respond to the invitation to receive prayer.  People come forth for prayer ministry that lingers for a while, as participants do their business with God.  Some weep, some rest in the Spirit, others are refreshed in their personal commitments they’ve been making before the Lord.

One pastor comments:

Thanks to your teaching on prayer, our church will launch a 40 day season of prayer.  We are passing through some difficulties, and your conference has renewed my passion to lead this church in expectant prayer.  You’ve helped me understand more about leading in prayer as well as praying in agreement.  I look forward to sharing with you what God does with us when you return for the next conference.

Another one wrote:

Through your solid teaching, the Lord confirmed many things that I had experienced already in prayer.  I believe the Lord brought me to you all to help me learn more about the Holy Spirit.  I love the emotional and noisy side of our traditions, but I really loved your solid biblical and intellectual teaching.  Plus, your methodical labtimes and guiding us to pray one at a time is confirming some other things I’ve been learning.  It was worth the quietness to listen and learn deeply!  I loved your teaching last fall, and glad that you returned to share more, particularly from leaders who have had experience and can teach.

Days 2-4: Matagalpa Nicaragua

For the weekend, the team moves to the mountain city of Matagalpa, Nicaragua (pop. 100,000).

Matagalpa2012

Building on the prior teaching events in that beautiful village, the teaching team gives the conference on prayer.

Again, nearly 50 people from 5 churches make the sacrificial effort to attend the Friday through Sunday event.

A few who had been at prior Dunamis events shared personal testimony of how they teach the material in their church and the impact the Dunamis teaching has made in their ministry.

An article like this cannot capture the glow in their eyes, the excitement in their voice, and all the results of ministry they have been doing as a result of Dunamis.  This time, they bring more people from their churches.

PastorDelTabernaculo

The host pastor writes:

I’ve come to understand deeply through the truth of the word, the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.  At times, our church has experienced a deep growth in desiring the Lord and a longing to walk with the Holy Spirit.  God brought me to your conference to solidify me in the manifestation of the gifts, and that I can lead the church in not fearing the gifts of the Spirit.  If I had to describe this conference to some one, I’d ask them: “Do you know the work of the Holy Spirit?  Dunamis is not a superficial class, it is deep and real.”  You’ve given me much material to help me with further study.  Since your first visit a few months ago, our church has been longing more for the work of the Spirit through prayer and fasting.

The host pastor allowed the team to teach and preach on Sunday morning.

As the evangelistic and renewal invitation was given after the sermon, many people came forward for prayer, seeking out the prayer teams formed by several class members.  Putting some of the learned prayer principles into practice, these team members cooperated with the work of Spirit in ministering to those who wanted more of the Lord.  Some were reconciled to the Lord, some wanted healing, some surrendered their life to the Lord.

PreachElTabernaculoRead this commentary from various participants from the different events:

  • The workshop was full of wisdom that I don’t have any questions at the moment.  I liked this seminar and can’t wait for you all to return.
  • This seminar moved my heart and I kept desiring to learn more.  May  you continue to be invited to permit us these great workshops that are of much spiritual help!
  • I learned more about how I could pray.  The structure you shared with us helped me to pray with some order and direction.  You’ve provided some great training in this area.
  • You helped me to know about the ingredients of prayer.  I had doubts that I was praying in a wrong manner, or if I even knew how to really pray.  Your conference helped revive my desire to pray, as you taught and shared with me ways of prayer, particularly the work of intercession.  Your teaching was clear and it was a great blessing for my life.  This seminar helped answer my questions!

A special thank you

A New Phase of Growth

April 10, 2013 by ecoach 1 Comment

FieldDayFor the last several weeks, our church development has been praying for a few specific items

  • 10 baptisms
  • Musicians to lead us in worship.
  • Attendance growth to nearly 100 people
  • Funds to secure a meeting place in the community vs the hotel.
  • Launching 6 small groups in the community to help seekers and new believers grow.

This has come on the heels of a season of praying and fasting, as well as some change up in the leadership team.  Life changes have moved some people on to other things.

As part of the planning, praying, and regular Sunday worship, I’ve had the opportunity to teach at our church.

  • Motives for Personal Evangelism
  • 4 Clues to Normal Evangelism Conversations

Not everyone can be:

  • A Billy Graham style public speaker
  • A street evangelist yelling at people.
  • An evangelist that does signs and wonders to confirm the word preached

So how can ordinary people, who lead ordinary businesses and work in ordinary jobs, find time to share their faith in the course of the day?

What role does an invitation to church plan in the process of evangelism?

These are some of the questions that I shared in my messages.

Afterwards, people told me they

  • Understood me (always good when I’m teaching in a 2nd lanugage)
  • Learned new things
  • Found easy to apply steps they can take during the week.

Prayer requests:

Join us in praying for towards the same goals above.

  • We have launched 5 small groups.
  • Baptisms are scheduled for May 4
  • Still seeking funds for our locale via the offerings.
  • Still asking the Lord for musicians.

Setting the DNA of a church

March 12, 2013 by ecoach Leave a Comment

Epicentro Church in Panama is a church that has invited me to speak to them in the past.

Building on those visits, they invited me to give another seminar on personal evangelism as well as preach for their evening service.

EpicentroTeaching

Keeping a passion high.

For the first segment, they heard me share about how to maintain a passion for personal evangelism, in the face of many different fears that are natural.

The talk to was timed to finish out a weekend conference on growing the church and near the beginning of a month of intensive outreach into their community, using

  • dramas,
  • tracts,
  • relationships,
  • come and see events
  • evangelistic small groups.

Only time will tell exactly what fruit this bore.  The immediately observable result was a ministry time of renewed dedication to reach people for Christ.

EpicentroAudience

Setting the DNA of a church

In 2013, Epicentro church will launch two new churches, one in the city of Panama, and the other in Santiago, the capital city of Chile.

Several of their leaders from Chile joined in via an internet connection for the worship service where I felt led to teach on the DNA of a church.

What do you want your church visitors to think when they experience your church?

  • You’re crazy.  OR
  • God is in your midst.

I asked them the same question as they set the DNA for their future churches.  This sermon was based out of

So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and inquirers or unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind?

But if an unbeliever or an inquirer comes in while everyone is prophesying, they are convicted of sin and are brought under judgment by all,as the secrets of their hearts are laid bare. So they will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, “God is really among you!”

1 Corinthians 14:23-25

EpicentroChurch

Epicentro church is a church in the Pentecostal stream.

As they set the DNA of two more churches, thinking about visitors will become part of their DNA.

They are a little under 4 years old and currently meet in a former gas station convenience store they rent near a busy intersection and bus stop.  Even though their resources appear meager, they have a heart to plant churches instead of hoard their resources for themselves.

A special thank you to the donors who helped make this visit possible!  Your gifts help set the DNA of 3 churches with the potential for more!

You’ve helped me overcome my fear

February 28, 2013 by ecoach Leave a Comment

This week, you helped me spend time with Operation Mobilization Panamá, teaching in their school of missions at their base in Volcán.

It was 7 hours on an overnight bus that got me there just in time to start teaching.

volcan-baru-2008-073.jpg

Missionaries from Columbia, Salvador, and Switzerland are in a short term study to develop their sense of call towards missions.

At the beginning of the class, they each shared some of their fears about personal evangelism

  • Beginning conversations about Jesus
  • Finding ways to steer a conversation.
  • Preaching in the parks at crowds.
  • Diagnosing spiritual condition in relationship with Christ
  • Appearing judgmental

However, as missionaries, they recognize the responsibility of personal evangelism and part of their work in their mission is open air contact evangelism.

What is contact evangelism?

Contact evangelism is sharing your faith upon first contact with a person.  It usually involves strangers, and an often scripted conversation.

ContractEvangelism

This approach and style works well for some people, but not for everyone.  Yet, in this mission, contact evangelism is a regular format of proclaiming the gospel.

How can these students overcome their fears about this form of evangelism and find a way to share their faith?

The big obstacle is fear.

Rather than diagnose the different fears, these students learn that people can overcome their evangelism fears by focusing on

  • the sovereignty of God (the key to timing)
  • how to listen for spiritual thirst (the open door to normal conversation)
  • simple conversational skills centered around your own journey to faith.
  • simple gospel presentations.

SmallGroupEvangelismTraining

I spent the first day with these students looking over this theology and skill.

Going to the streets in the big city

After some class time, the team took their dramas and preaching to the street.

For the first location, we visited a AIDS treatment clinic, where the team visited with patients receiving treatment and then shared the good news of the gospel via drama and conversation.

This clinic is in partnership with a local church, so there is a great place for new people to start connecting.  There, they can explore their faith for the first time, or seek answers to their question, or start their work of discipleship.

OpenAirAids

Because this was held outdoors on a busy street corner, a few people from the neighborhood dropped by to see what all the noise and commotion was about.

At the end of the dramas, a short message from one of the students led to an invitation to further conversation.

Right after that short preaching, nearly every team member was engaged in 1-1 conversation with people who were very willing to talk.

Second stop: the park

ParkOpenAir

Our next stop was the town square in the center of a busy city.  The team added more dramas to the mix and it didn’t take long before a crowd of up to 50 people had stopped to watch.

Then the team told the redemption story through a drama called “Light and Darkness.”

One of the students then gave a short message that invited further 1-1 conversation with those who wanted to learn more.

The conversations are important

SpiritualConversations

The spiritual conversations that followed are the key to effective open air evangelism in the way we practice it.

It gives us a chance to listen to the spiritual needs of people who are willing to engage us in conversation.

We are not manipulating the conversation, but looking for the advance work of God in preparing hearts for such a conversation.

Those who are not ready for conversations leave, but those who are at a place to talk seek us out.

This is where the students saw that knowing the principles of spiritual thirst and God’s sovereignty  there is little need for fear.

They were looking for spiritual thirst, they could see where God was working, and each conversation was fruitful conversation around spiritual need, rather than argumentative debates over apologetics.

People came to faith

The exciting outcome is that these students saw that some people were ready to committ their lives to Christ.  They were at the harvest point in the process of evangelism.

Others were not yet there, but left with some gospel information and seeds that the Lord could use to further help people along in their process to faith.

Some of the team members had the joy of leading new people to Christ.

My great joy

ClassTeaching2

When it was all over, I rejoice that there were total strangers who willingly placed their faith in Christ that day.

On top of that, the students had the following feedback to give me:

  • You helped take the fear out of evangelism.
  • Once I learned about spiritual thirst, I started knowing what to look for in a conversations.
  • I didn’t feel like I had to steer a conversation.  The door was already open.
  • I was able to relax during this outreach and not stress over people’s lack of response.
  • This is a less aggressive form of evangelism that respects the dignity of the other person.

That evening, I took the 7 hour bus-ride home.

Is 14 hours in a bus worth the 2 days of teaching?  You bet.
